Kandy |
Sunday after the Esala Perahera of Saturday evening there's an other perahera going out in the afternoon, the day perahera. This time the procession doesn't start from the Temple of the Tooth but from the devala 'Senanaiyaka Vidaya'. We look for the place where the processions will start and once again we enjoy the decorating of the elephants and the preparation of the Kandy dancers, drummers and other musicians.
Along the roads where the perahera will pass we almost don't find a good place to stand due to the growing crowd. This time the perahera isn't that much impressive as the main one, on the other hand one can see the details now much better in daylight.

Now one can also see passing a group of penitents with hooks in their back! (see photo). The procession now also walks three times around the square before the temple, after which the tusker enters the temple entrance.
And with this we close the chapter of the peraheras, an experience never to forget. It was really one of the highlights of our Sri Lanka tour. People who visits Sri Lanka without having the possibility to be present on one of the peraheras really miss something!
Around 5 pm we're back in the hotel relishing with a delightful arrack cocktail. Cheers!
